Uveitis;types,causes and treatment


Uveitis is described as the inflammation of the uveal tract.

What is uveal tract?

Uveal tract is a vascular layer of an eyeball which is divided into three parta:choroid, ciliary body and iris.it is pigmented and highly vascular layer.

Classification:

It us classified in various ways:

Anatomical classification:

  • Anterior uveitis include:iritis,iridocyclitis
  • Intermediate uveitis:cyclitis
  • Posterior uveitis:choroiditis
  • Pan uveitis:inflammation of all the parts of uveal tract

Clinical classification:

Depends upon the mode of onset and symptoms.

  • Acute uveitis
  • Chronic uveitis

Histological classification:

  • Granulomatous uveitis: contains lymphocytes, epithelioid and giant cells
  • Non granylomatous uveitis: contains many polymorpholeukocytes

Causes:

Uveitis can be Infective caused by bacteria, virus,fungi,protozoans and worms.it can also be due to non-infevtive causes such as autoimmune reactions etc.

Treatment:

The aim of the treatment is to ;

  • Relieve the patient
  • Treat underlying cause
  • Symptomatic treatment
